Drachenfels Railway
A ride on Germany's oldest cog railway is far more than just a childhood dream. Since 1883, it has connected the old town of Königswinter, nestled in the Rhine Valley, with the Siebengebirge hills, culminating at the Drachenfels plateau. The Drachenfels Railway has transported more than 40 million passengers through the Siebengebirge and delights young and old alike with its superb engineering and breathtaking views over the romantic Rhine Valley.
The steel lifeline connects the valley station of the Drachenfels railway with the Nibelungenhalle, the Drachenburg castle, the castle courtyard and the Drachenfels plateau with restaurant and event location.
A visit to the Drachenfels Railway is always a glimpse into history. Where once puffing steam locomotives ran, electric railcars have been operating on the line since 1953, taking passengers up the 1520m long route to an altitude of 289m.
